The Western Maine University and Community College Center will officially open its doors May 5.

PARIS – The Western Maine University and Community College Center has opened its doors.

While the formal opening will not happen until May 5, the partners in the center – Central Maine Community College, University College and the Western Maine Community Action Career Center – are already scheduling workforce, community and educational activities.

Among the offerings:

The Oxford Hills Human Resources Roundtable will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. April 14 to talk about Employee Education and Training. The roundtable is an open, free, monthly meeting for individuals who have human resources as part or all of their job responsibility.

• Central Maine Community College will offer at least three college credit courses beginning May 17 and continuing until July 1: College Writing (ENG 101-31) will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:10 p.m. starting May 18. Cost is $279, plus textbooks. Also, Fundamentals of Education for Special Needs (EDU 185-31) and Algebra I (MAT 040-31) will be held Monday and Wednesdays beginning May 17. Fundamentals of Education will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and algebra will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost of each is $258, plus textbooks.

• A second summer session will begin July 6 and continue through Aug. 25. Courses will include Introduction to Computer Applications (BCA 120-31) Mondays and Wednesday from 5:30 to 9 p.m; College Writing (ENG 101-31) Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 4:15 p.m.; Speech (SPE 101-31) Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:45 p.m.; Intermediate Algebra (MAT 100-31) Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m.; and Introduction to Psychology (PSY 101-31) Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Additional courses are scheduled for the fall semester including College Writing, Technical Writing, Developmental Psychology, Principles of Accounting II and Principles of Supervision. Registration for both summer sessions begins April 5. • Beginning in May, the University System will offer more than 200 courses at the center via interactive television, videoconference, and the Internet. • The Career Center will offer a series of skill building sessions for job seekers during April, including Interviewing, April 7; Job Search, Work Values and Budgeting, April 8; Financial Aid, April 12; Self-Employment, April 14; Labor Market Information and Maine Employment Information Guide, April 20; Moving Through Fear, April 23; Career Decision Making Job Neds and Transferable Skills, April 27; Self-Esteem, April 27; and Communication/Team Building.
