BANGOR (AP) – More medical tests will be conducted on an infant whose remains were allegedly burned in the back yard of a Milo residence by a man police have charged with abuse of a corpse.
The medical examiner’s office said an autopsy Monday didn’t determine the cause of death and that the case is pending further study.
Police were called to the home of Ralph Disley on Friday by a resident who said they might find the remains of an infant there. Police said that when they arrived, they found Disley burning what appeared to be the remains of an infant.
Police said Disley, 46, lived at the house with his wife and two teenage daughters. He was charged with abuse of a corpse and is free on $200 bail.
Lt. Dennis Appleton said police consider the death suspicious, but that they don’t know if foul play was involved because the cause of death isn’t known.
Detectives spent much of Sunday inside the Disley residence, where they searched for any signs of an infant being born, Appleton said.
However, he said, nobody has determined if the infant was born alive or stillborn, or who, if anyone, in the household might have been pregnant.
“I guess I’m not going to speculate on that,” he said. “It’s way too early to speculate at this time. We may never be able to establish the manner of death.”
Besides searching the home and property, police have been interviewing people in the community who might have information regarding the incident. Appleton said leads continue to come in.
Appleton said members of the Disley family were cooperating with police to some extent.
“The family has chosen to talk to us in a very limited way,” he said.
