AUBURN – A BB fired into a home on Blackcat Road Monday night sent police scurrying in an attempt to catch the person responsible for what appears to be a fresh round of vandalism.

Nobody was hurt when the projectile was fired through a window and into the home at about 8 p.m., although people were inside at the time.

Blackcat Road is off Old Danville Road near Station Road.

Over the following two hours, at least two more vehicles or homes were struck by BBs. Police said at least a half dozen similar incidents occurred throughout the day.

Officers fanned out across most corners of the city after new calls came in Monday night where windows had been shot out of vehicles or homes were struck.

Damage to cars and trucks was found along Gamage Avenue in one end of town and at Third and Dunn streets in New Auburn.

Confusing the investigation is the police attempt to determine which damage is fresh and which may have pre-existed.

Police said BBs had been fired earlier in the day on Whitney Street and near the parking lot at the Auburn Mall. A paint ball was fired at a vehicle near an Auburn school.

When new reports of shooting started coming in Monday night, police stopped several vehicles in the areas where the incidents were reported. The culprits were not found. At one point, police in Lewiston joined the hunt after a suspect was seen crossing into that city via the South Bridge.

In recent days, police have questioned a pair of juveniles about the shooting spree. Although the minors confessed to some earlier vandalism, they denied firing the shots that injured a man in New Auburn and caused thousands of dollars in damages in following days.

It was unclear Monday night if the juveniles have been charged.

The spree began in late March when a man was struck in the chest by a BB believed to have been fired from a moving car. The victim of that March 29 attack was hospitalized and later released with the BB still lodged in his chest.

Police believe it was around the same time the person or persons responsible for the shooting began firing at homes and businesses in both Lewiston and Auburn.

The person or persons responsible could face charges including aggravated assault, once caught.

Auburn police Lt. Tim Cougle said officers would maintain a heavy presence throughout the city for the remainder of Monday night. He said the beefed up patrol would likely continue until suspects are caught.

Police Detective Mitchell Sweetser is heading the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 784-7332.
