NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – An amateur wrestler from Warren died after he was injured in a match at the Newport Elks Club, police said.
John Coggeshall, 34, suffered fatal injuries during a Saturday night match involving two other wrestlers. When police and rescue arrived at the scene, he was unresponsive, police said. He died on Sunday at Rhode Island Hospital.
“The initial investigation shows it appears to be an accident as a result of a wrestling move,” Lt. Norman Bestoso told The Newport Daily News.
The wrestling match was part of a program put on by the Main Event Wrestling Federation, said Manny Escobar, who runs the group.
Escobar said Coggeshall, who worked for Stop & Shop in Quincy, Mass., was a founding member of the federation, which was established locally in 1987.
“He’d been wrestling for years,” Escobar said. “He was a great guy.”
Coggeshall, who weighed in at 220-pounds, wrestled under the name Doctor Destruction.
Escobar said wrestlers from Main Event create their own characters and story lines. He said the match that Coggeshall was involved in was standard wrestling fare.
“This was nothing he hadn’t done a million times before,” Escobar said.
Escobar said Monday he has yet to decide if he will continue to run the wrestling events.
“It’s to be determined. I’ve just lost one of my best friends,” he said.
