JAY – Otis Federal Credit Union employees were pleasantly surprised upon receiving the $750 check from the Maine Credit Union League to present to an organization of their choice.

This check was received by the credit union for their efforts in collecting money for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. Otis FCU was ranked 19th for total contributions by credit unions.

The credit union chose to donate the money to the Phillips Food Pantry.

Marie Bubier, representing the food pantry, reported on the outpouring from the surrounding community since an article was published in early February asking for resources. Many people have lost jobs due to manufacturing plants closing down. When the article ran she was saying “Lets see what I have”; and because of the generosity can now say, “What is it that you need?”

Although the shelves are full temporarily, the need will continue. Elaine Romanoski of Avon is the organizer of the pantry. Because of a family illness, Romanoski has stepped aside from the daily operations and the Bubiers have been keeping things going. Romanoski still does much of the behind-the-scenes work.

Contact Marie Bubier at 639-4666 or Romanoski at 639-2746 to make a donation to the pantry, which is open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Phillips.
