RUMFORD – The SAD 43 board expelled one middle school student, approved a long-term suspension for another, and readmitted a third in three separate closed doors sessions Monday night.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said a seventh-grade Mountain Valley Middle School girl was expelled following a 15-minute student disciplinary hearing for possessing and distributing a prescription drug at the school.

The board voted unanimously for the expulsion. The child’s parents may petition the board to have her readmitted.

Hodgkin said readmittance must include proof that the offense would not reoccur.

Following a half-hour closed session, the board approved the long-term suspension of a seventh-grade boy for possession of a prescription drug. Hodgkin said the boy was suspended from the middle school on March 9. He is due to return on April 12. Whenever a long-term suspension is carried out, Hodgkin said the board must act on the matter. Rumford board member Mary Hickey and Roxbury member Mark Touchette opposed the approval. Board chairman Arthur Boivin abstained.

A sixth-grade girl was unanimously readmitted to classes on April 6, following a three-month suspension that began on Jan. 5. She had been expelled for causing multiple bomb threats at the middle school last fall. Hodgkin said she received counseling related to the offenses.
