LIVERMORE FALLS – Police are investigating the theft of an 8-foot wooden cross from the lawn of the Eaton Memorial United Methodist Church. Letters to a church sign were also taken sometime since Palm Sunday.

The heavy cross was on the front lawn of the church on Church Street, the Rev. Joseph Chamberland said.

“It was right into the ground, too,” he said.

It was the first year the cross, which was stained dark brown, was put out for Holy Week, he said.

Chamberland said he noticed the cross was gone Tuesday evening but wanted to check with the person who put it up to make sure it wasn’t taken down to have something done to it.

“I couldn’t believe someone actually stole it,” he said.

The reverend reported the cross stolen to police Wednesday morning.

The cross isn’t the same one used in the Walk of the Cross scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Good Friday at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay.

That “walk will go on,” he said.

On the walk a cross is carried from St. Rose’s up Main Street to Church Street in Livermore Falls. Stops are made at First Baptist Church, Church of the Nazarene and Eaton Memorial United Methodist Church, with brief services held at each church, Chamberland said.

About 75 people have joined the walk in past years.<.000>
