Your “Looking Back” column on March 29 covering girls playing marbles in 1904 demonstrates the Sun Journal’s commitment to covering girls’ sports. Is there hope for an article covering the Edward Little girls ski team state championship? Will we have to wait until 2104?
The EL girls alpine and Nordic teams worked hard all season, often training and racing in sub-zero wind chills that may have discouraged sports writers. During most of the winter, they had to travel north to find snow. Dedication and passion for their sport paid off with a state championship.
There are lots of angles to build this story on. L-A has produced Olympians, including Julie Parisienne. There is a Nordic tradition including the ski jump that used to stand in Pettingill Park. There is an economic connection since our ski teams train at Lost Valley.
But the bottom line is that these exceptional girls deserve community recognition. The Sun Journal should help.

Editor’s note: The Sun Journal covered all three days of the state championship skiing competition with stories appearing Feb. 18,19 and 20 on the front of the Sports section. A photograph of EL skier Catherine Comeau, who won the slalom event, accompanied the Feb. 19 story.
