AUGUSTA – Martel School fifth-grader Alyssa Robinson was invited to the State Senate as a guest of Sen. Peggy Rotundo recently.
Alyssa was chosen to serve as an honorary page for the Senate after she made the school’s effort honor roll, a system which recognizes students who have a great work ethic.
Alyssa and her father, Art Robinson, an Army recruiter stationed at the Topsham annex of Brunswick Naval Air Station, arrived at the State House at 9 a.m. and found a hubbub of activity. The Maine School Food Service Association had set up several tables with fresh fruits and eggs. Chefs make omelets free for the public.
Alyssa and her father made their way to the Senate chamber where Sergeant-at-Arms Bob Crockett and Senate Staffer Richard Weegar greeted them. Other honorary pages arrived and the senators filed into the chambers.
Crockett briefed the honorary pages on their duties. Soon Alyssa and two other pages were taking notes from one senator to another and delivering interoffice memos.
After the adjournment, Rotundo visited with the pages from her district.
Having been stationed around the northeast United States, Robinson said Maine’s State House is the most accessible to the public of any he had visited.
