First, I want to say how grateful I have been to have had food stamps. I am disabled and on a fixed income. However, I recently got married and now, except for $10 a month, am no longer eligible because I got married.

We are an older couple; my husband is three years away from retiring. He is having difficulty finding a job. Now he is no longer eligible for food stamps or MaineCare because we got married. We are just scraping by.

We got married because we love each other and want to share our lives together. I think it is sad. If we just lived together, or got divorced, then we could afford to eat.

Something seems very wrong with this picture. I thought when people got married it would help financially, too. Apparently I was wrong.
