POLAND – Andrew Stacey was a one-man show for Fryeburg, which opened the 2004 baseball season Friday with a 3-1 eight-inning victory over Poland.
Stacey struck out 17 batters, while walking one. Stacey also had three of the four Fryeburg hits, including a solo home run in the seventh inning to tie the game, and a double to drive in the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
Alex Smith was equally effective on the mound, fanning 14 through seven and a third innings for the Knights. Smith also had the only extra base hit for Poland, connecting for a double in the seventh inning. Smith allowed two walks, though those walks proved to be disasterous as they went on to be the two runs knocked in by Stacey in the eighth.
With two outs in the eighth inning and two on from Smith’s two walks, Bo Apti singled to load the bases. Stacey then delivered the decisive hit, a two-run double. He then went out to retire the side in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win for Fryeburg.
