The other day, I stopped and picked up two discarded tires on the side of the road. Living in Auburn, I took the tires to the recycling plant on Goldthwaite Road in Auburn.

When I placed them with the rest of the tires, a gentleman who works there told me there was a charge for leaving the tires. Needless to say, I was very surprised.

For doing the community a little service, I was charged $4.50, $2.25 for each tire.

Now let me see if I got this straight.

The Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. obviously sells these tires to a third party. I am fairly certain they do not give them to this third party. So they sell them and then they also charge a fee to whoever drops them off.

Or these charges may be mandated by some government entity.

I picked these tires up from the side of the road on First Flight Street.

Now, do I really have to draw a picture?
