MINOT – The Minot Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at the Minot Town Office when the speaker will be Kevin Shane on “Mesannie Wilkins.”
Members met on March 9. The president noted that membership cards had been printed and will be filled out and presented to members denoting either “charter member” or “regular” membership.
Secretary Eda Tripp presented the society an author-signed copy of each of the two books published by the Androscoggin Historical Society in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Androscoggin County.
Thomas and Ginger Gould donated two books to the Minot Historical Society – a copy of a 1906 register of the towns of Oxford, Hebron and Minot and a copy of the Minot Sesquicentennial 1802-1952.
The speaker was Nancy Lecompte, author of the Androscoggin County book, “Alnobak.” Lecompte is a descendant of the Abenaki Indian Tribe. She spoke of the difficulty in finding correct information about Indians and said many of the current perceptions are more “Hollywood” than real.
She said she has had trouble researching her own roots. She spoke of the many places where the early tribes lived in Maine and of the early marriages – some with the white settlers. Lecompte told of the misnomers about the clothing worn by the women, the hair styles and the medicines.
