Dear Sun Spots: Sun Spots seems to work wonders everyday for people. Now I am hoping you can help a friend of mine.

My friend’s name is Shannon and she recently was placed in remission after battling cancer for six years! She found out Tuesday that she is almost four months pregnant. Well, I was wondering if anyone has baby items that they would kindly pass on. All of her money goes toward bills, chemo treatments and medication. Any items will be so greatly appreciated and all items and donations toward items can be sent to her. I know she would love to hear from people who care. She has no family and is alone, with a “mircle baby” on the way. Thank you so much for your help, and I hope to brighten her gloomy days with your letters and gifts of support. Items can be sent to: S. Bachelder, 66 Main Street, #1 Norway, Maine 04268. You can also e-mail her at wehelpu@megalink.net. – No Name, South Paris.

Dear Sun Spots: Is there anybody in the Norway-Oxford area who does haircuts on cats? – Carol T., Otisfield.

Answer:
Sun Spots called several grooming businesses who state they groom dogs but not cats. Perhaps readers may be able to help you here.

Dear Sun Spots: You are a great help. I am sure you can help my request.

As far as I know, Lou Rod has closed its business on Sabattus Street.

My son wants me to make some Needham’s and send him the recipe. However, I can’t find my recipe. I hope you can find one. It included mashed potatoes, coconut and vanilla. – No Name, No Town.

Answer:
Sun Spots provided the following response to “A Needham Fanatic” in the Feb. 27 column and hopefully your son will enjoy it also:

Unfortunately the number is out of service and no change of number has been provided to callers. It looks like the store has closed.

In the meantime, perhaps you and your family will enjoy the following recipe found in the Sun Journal archives:

Best Needhams from “Cooking Downeast” by Marjorie Standish. Ingredients: ¾ cup mashed potatoes (not seasoned), ½ teaspoon salt, two 1-pound packages confectioners’ sugar, 1 stick margarine, ½ pound flaked coconut, 2 teaspoons vanilla. Method: Pare and cook potatoes to make ¾ cup mashed potatoes (not seasoned). Add salt. Using a double boiler, place margarine in it and melt over boiling water. Add mashed potatoes, confectioners’ sugar, flaked coconut and vanilla. Mix well and turn into a buttered jelly roll pan. Spread evenly. Place in a cool place to harden. When hard, cut into small squares and dip in the following chocolate mixture.

Chocolate dip ingredients: 1 12-ounce package chocolate bits, 4 squares unsweetened chocolate, ½ a cake of paraffin (2½ by 2½ – the same paraffin that is used on top of jam and jelly). Method: Use a double boiler again. Place paraffin in top over boiling water to melt. Then add the two kinds of chocolate. Allow chocolate to melt. Stir well to mix ingredients. A toothpick or cake tester may be used to dip the Needham squares. Hold each square above chocolate mixture after dipping so the squares drain well. Place on waxed paper to harden. Recipes will make 66 good-sized Needhams. Recipe halves easily.
