NEW YORK – Mike Mussina got his 200th win and rookie Bubba Crosby hit a three-run homer in his first start for the New York Yankees, who beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4.
Gary Sheffield drove in two runs to help the Yankees kick-start their offense a bit and gain a split of the four-game series.
After going 3-3 on their road trip, the White Sox head to Chicago for their home opener Tuesday against Kansas City.
Mussina (1-2) was coming off two poor starts against Tampa Bay to start the season, and he got in trouble from the outset in this one, too. He made an error in the first inning and gave up three runs, prompting chants of “Moose!” to turn to boos on an overcast Easter Sunday. But the right-hander settled down from there, becoming the 100th major league pitcher to reach 200 wins. It took him five tries.
Mussina allowed four runs – three earned – and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.
Crosby, acquired from the Dodgers in a deal for Robin Ventura at the trade deadline last year, was a surprise in making the big league roster with a huge spring.
Angels 7, Rangers 2
ARLINGTON, Texas – Bartolo Colon allowed two runs and seven hits over eight innings, and Vladimir Guerrero homered as Anaheim’s two prized free agent acquisitions led the Angels to a 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers.
Colon (2-0) recovered after allowing hits to the first two Rangers, keeping in check a lineup that produced 12 runs in each of the first two games of the series. He struck out five and walked one, allowing just one earned run.
Guerrero led off the sixth with his second homer.
Tigers 6, Twins 5
DETROIT – Craig Monroe hit an RBI single in the tenth to give the Detroit Tigers a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.
Rondell White walked with one out in the 10th, and pinch-runner Andres Torres stole second. Monroe followed with a line single to left off Joe Roa (1-1) to give the Tigers their fifth win in six games.
Steve Colyer (1-0) got his first major league win with an inning of scoreless relief. Minnesota used seven pitchers while Detroit used six.
Mariners 9, Athletics 4
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Seattle Mariners avoided matching the worst start in franchise history, rallying with two runs in the ninth off Arthur Rhodes and getting a two-run homer by Bret Boone in a five-run 10th inning to beat the Oakland Athletics 9-4 Sunday.
Showing little life for the first eight innings, the Mariners tied the game off Oakland’s new closer on RBI singles by Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Winn with one out in the ninth.
They then broke open the game against a shaky Chris Hammond (1-1) in the 10th to avoid matching their 0-6 start in 1991.
Devil Rays 10, Orioles 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Victor Zambrano won his third game of the season by allowing one run over 6 2-3 innings and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-1 Sunday.
Zambrano (3-0) gave up seven hits, two walks and struck out six. He pitched out of trouble throughout, holding the Orioles to 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Aubrey Huff, Jose Cruz Jr. and Tino Martinez homered for the Devil Rays.
Royals 5, Indians 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Ken Harvey hit a go-ahead single off Rafael Betancourt in the eighth inning and Benito Santiago followed with a run-scoring double that led the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Indians 5-3 Sunday.
Jose Jimenez (0-1) hit Mike Sweeney with a pitch leading off the eighth and walked Joe Randa with one out. Betancourt relieved and gave up hits to his only two batters.
Scott Sullivan (2-0) pitched one scoreless inning, and Curtis Leskanic walked two in the ninth before finishing for his second save.
Cleveland, which stranded 12 runners, had tied it 3-all in the seventh with the help of a throwing error by pitcher Jason Grimsley that left Ronnie Belliard sprawled on the field.
Grimsley picked up Belliard’s slow roller in front of the mound and threw off balance toward first. The ball went behind Belliard’s back as he crashed into the shoulder of Sweeney, who was reaching for the ball. Belliard lay motionless for several minutes but got back up and stayed in the game.
Coco Crisp scored on the error. His double off Sweeney had driven in Travis Hafner with the first run of the inning, scored on the error.
Dennys Reyes, the fifth left-hander to start a game for the Royals this year, allowed one run, four hits and three walks in five innings. Reyes, who came to camp as a non-roster invitee, made his first start since Sept. 14, 2002.
Cleveland starter Jason Davis got his second straight no-decision, allowing three runs, six hits and four walks in six innings.
Tim Laker’s RBI single put Cleveland ahead of the first, but Santiago grounded into a run-scoring double play in the second.
Kansas City made it 3-1 in the sixth on Sweeney’s RBI single and Juan Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly.
Notes: The Indians have scored first in all but one of their seven games. … Royals’ starters are 0-2 with four no-decisions, the first time since 1992 no starter has won in the first six games. … The Indians play their home opener Monday against Minnesota. … The Indians have 10 or more hits already in four games. Last year, they had 59 games with double-digit hits.
