MECHANIC FALLS – Maggie Norton, a sixth-grader at Poland Community School, has been named Student of the Month by the Tri-Town Optimists of Mechanic Falls.

Maggie is a hard worker who volunteers when anyone needs help and cares deeply about other people, said Principal Carolyn Johnson.

“Whenever a classmate needs a smile or a caring ear, Maggie is willing to help, yet never expects recognition for it,” the principal said.

“She can always find a way to discover something positive in any situation. Unafraid of hard work, Maggie chooses to do not only the basic vocabulary/spelling list, but also the challenge words,’ although spelling is a subject she really has to study.”

Some 25 residents from Mechanic Falls, Poland and Minot joined to start the Tri-Town Optimist Club, which is affiliated with Optimist International, one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.

The club works on projects to benefit area youth and the community. For information about meeting times and membership, call the club’s president, Vicki Dean, at 345-9150.
