EAST DIXFIELD – Acting Public Works Director Tim Hanson got permission from selectmen Monday night to buy 100 new water meters.

“We have a need for 500 of them, but we will be replacing the oldest ones first,” Hanson said at Monday night’s debut meeting in the newly-expanded East Dixfield fire station.

Some of the meters, he added, are 50 years old.

In addition to the touch pad meters, which cost $82 each, Hanson said the vendor agreed to give the town a new $850 meter reader free, and have the town buy a second one for half price at $425.

Selectmen briefly debated the matter before approving the $8,600 expenditure.
