Mr. Benoit, in his letter to the editor April 7, attempts to present a “flip-flop” mentality as the governor’s position on a number of matters of state.
He ignores the responsibility of those who serve in high places of our government to constantly review their decisions affecting policy in an attempt to ensure that these policies and decisions of state continue to serve the best interests of the citizens.
He fails to recognize that when in the course of this review process any policy or direction that fails to serve this purpose must be terminated and a new direction sought.
I am surprised to find that a former judge would find it so difficult to recognize this responsibility because it takes courage and foresight to reverse direction and make unpopular decisions. Gov. John E. Baldacci is that kind of person, and I trust him with my future and the future of Maine.
