BOSTON (AP) – Miguel Tejada’s first homer for Baltimore in the 11th inning started a five-run rally that carried the Orioles to a 12-7 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.
The former AL most valuable player with Oakland, who signed as a free agent in the offseason, entered the game with nine hits, all singles, and no RBIs in his first 30 at-bats.
Tejada was 0-for-3 with two walks before leading off the 11th against Bronson Arroyo (0-1), who had just come in as the seventh of Boston’s nine pitchers in the game.
Jay Gibbons’ RBI triple made it 9-7 and Baltimore padded the lead when runs scored on an error, a walk and a single.
Buddy Groom (1-0) got the win and Jorge Julio got the last three outs.
The three-game series was reduced to one by rainouts Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Boston juggled its rotation but didn’t change Pedro Martinez’s spot, which may have been a mistake.
He allowed seven runs in five innings, including David Segui’s three-run homer that tied the game 7-all in the fifth. Baltimore starter Sidney Ponson also struggled, allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings.
Each team had just two hits from the sixth through 10th innings, although the Red Sox nearly won the game in the bottom of the 10th when they loaded the bases with two outs. Then center fielder Luis Matos caught Bill Mueller’s drive at the left-center field wall.
Martinez and Ponson both allowed runners in each of their innings.
Martinez put the leadoff batter on base in each of the first four innings. Then he retired the first two batters in the fifth before Javy Lopez doubled, Gibbons walked and Segui hit his first homer of the year.
The Orioles had gone ahead 2-0 when Brian Roberts started the game with his first homer and Larry Bigbie doubled in Matos.
Boston took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the second on Johnny Damon’s two-run single and Mueller’s three-run homer that snapped an 0-for-20 slump.
Baltimore cut it to 5-4 in the fourth, scoring on a groundout by Matos and an RBI single by Bigbie. The Red Sox made it 7-4 in the bottom of the inning on Damon’s run-scoring single and Ortiz’s RBI groundout.
