LIVERMORE FALLS – The Maine Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America will partner with the town of Livermore Falls to sponsor a potluck dinner and evening program on “Understanding Watersheds.”

The event will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, at American Legion Post 10, 17 Reynolds Ave. All are welcome.

The evening will begin with an old-fashioned potluck dinner followed by a demonstration of how watersheds function. Community members can share their favorite casserole, salad or dessert with friends and neighbors.

Representatives from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection will utilize a “watershed model” to visually show participants how watersheds function. Informational handouts will be provided describing how residents within the Androscoggin River watershed can do their part to help prevent pollution in the river. An Earth Day dialogue to identify other environmental issues of importance to Mainers in the region will conclude the program.

As supporters of Earth Day, the town will continue efforts to recycle at home and at work per the ordinance on solid waste, which was adopted by voters in 2001. In addition, the Adopt-a-Spot “clean-up” effort will be explained and applications made available.

Founded in 1922 as a national organization of hunters, anglers and other conservation-minded outdoor enthusiasts, the league supports volunteer, community-based action and education programs to ensure the sustainable use of America’s natural resources.

Priorities for the Maine chapter are improving outdoor ethics in the state, surveying Maine streams and rivers to assess fish habitat and possible pollutants and addressing wildlife conservation concerns.
