HARWICH, Mass. (AP) – Authorities are investigating the death of Harwich woman whose bloody and confused boyfriend showed up at the police station to report she was dead.
Christopher Clarida, 40, arrived at the police station on Friday morning to say that when he woke up, Elizabeth Mahar, was not breathing. Mahar, 42, was later pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital.
Clarida has been charged with carjacking for allegedly taking the van of a man who stopped to offer him help. Mahar’s death has not been ruled a homicide and is still under investigation. An autopsy and toxicology tests have been scheduled.
Clarida told police he awoke Friday morning at Mahar’s home and discovered she was not breathing, a police source told the Cape Cod Times.
Clarida then apparently “jumped through a window and ran to the street,” the source said.
A bloody and disoriented Clarida walked down the street and caught the attention of a passing motorist who asked if he needed help. Clarida allegedly shoved the man out of his van and drove it to the police station, police sources said.
At the station, he told officers that “he was being chased by people with ray guns,” a source said.
Clarida, of Barnstable, was held overnight at the police station and is expected to be arraigned on the carjacking charge Tuesday in Orleans District Court.
Mahar, 42, was a divorced mother of four children.
