This is in reference to the letter to the editor written by John Benoit (April 7). I am a relative newcomer to Maine politics, but I have, indeed, been active in politics for many years. I have had occasion to observe Gov. Baldacci in action and have admired his effort to balance a budget when little money is there to make ends meet.
His ability to listen to arguments put forth and reconsider his position does not constitute a flip-flop, but rather a demonstration of flexibility that is often necessary when faced with the very hard decisions that have to be made in the existing financial conditions.
I simply ask the question, would you rather have a person who sticks to his ideas regardless of the consequences or someone who, upon listening to further ramifications of the path chosen, opts for a different way to meet the constitutional demands of his office?
I applaud him for putting restrictions on racinos. I see no reason why we have to abide by the demands of Las Vegas interests. The governor’s role is to get the best deal for the people of Maine, and I hope he does just that.
Thoughtful reconsideration is never a cop-out.
