TURNER – Oxford County Extension Homemakers are sponsoring a Basket Bingo, featuring Longaberger Baskets, to benefit the Senior Companion Program at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at Boofy Quimby Hall, Route 219, North Turner. Doors will open at 11 a.m. A light lunch and snacks will be available.

The Senior Companion Program provides an opportunity for volunteers age 60 and over to provide companionship and support to homebound adults. They provide one-on-one companionship to the isolated, lonely and forgotten seniors. Part of the National Senior Service Corps, the program serves 13 Maine counties and is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. In the year 2002-2003, there were 111 Senior Companions statewide, serving 570 clients through 30,000 visits totaling 89,072 hours.

The program is also important in the lives of the Senior Companion, providing structure and meaning. In addition, the Senior Companions themselves are low-income seniors who earn a small stipend for their service, which helps them meet their basic living costs.
