NEW PORTLAND – A grass fire spread to a barn/storage shed on Route 16 Saturday and then to a house and fields. It destroyed the barn, gutted the unoccupied house and burned about 10 acres, mostly fields.
New Portland Assistant Fire Chief Kendall Knowles said about 50 firefighters from seven departments responded to the fire.
Fire officials are investigating the fire, he said.
There were no burn permits issued in the area, Knowles said.
It took about an hour to contain the woods fire and about four hours total to extinguish the structure and woods fires.
It took about two-thirds of the firefighters who responded to control the woods fire and about one-third of them to contain the structure fire, Knowles said.
The house, which hadn’t been lived in for several years, was owned by Alton Lishness of North Anson, he said.
Departments that fought the blaze were New Portland, North Anson, Anson, Madison, Kingfield, New Vineyard and Highland-Lexington.
