JAY – Lois Beedy Niles, 81, of Jay, died Sunday afternoon, April 18, at her home.
Born in Phillips, Oct. 28, 1922, a daughter of Harold and Dora (Hoppe) Beedy, she attended schools in Avon, Phillips, New York City and Stanley High School in Kingfield, from which she graduated.
After being employed by Sprague’s Ice Cream and Lunch Parlor and S.J. Wyman Dry Good Store, both in Kingfield, she entered nurse training, graduating from the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary General Hospital in Portland. In 1945, she returned to Kingfield and married Clarence (Pete) Niles.
For several years she was employed by Franklin County Hospital as a staff member and as a private duty nurse. She also did much private duty nursing in homes throughout the county and assisted in several home births. For several months she was employed as a staff nurse at Wentworth Memorial Hospital in Dover, N.H.
She was well known and appreciated for her two years as an employee of the Maine T.B. and Health Assoc. in Wilton and perhaps better known for the Public Health Nurse and Home Health Nursing, having attended the School of Public Health at Simmons College in Boston, Mass.
At the time of her retirement she had been employed by the State of Maine for 12 years as a surveyor of health care facilities in Franklin, Oxford and Androscoggin Counties, having obtained certification from the University of California, Los Angeles.
She enjoyed gatherings of family and friends with her husband of 49 years, as well as bowling, snowmobiling, swimming, water and snow skiing and fishing. She enjoyed various crafts and her flower gardens. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Kingfield and a member of County Square Quilters of Jay, the Alumni Assoc. of Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary Nurse Assoc. and the Jay Historical Society.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula H. Enman of Jay; three granddaughters, Cara H. Smith and her husband, Richard (Rick) of Kingfield, Carla J. Holmes of Bangor and Shanna E. Russell and her husband, Nathan of Clarksville, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Delaney and Ethan Russell of Clarksville, Tenn. and Kevin Smith of Kingfield; one sister, Irene B. Corson of Kingfield; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; and her three brothers, Donald, Paul and Sherbourne Beedy.
