POLAND – Laurie Levine describes herself as someone with the time and passion for shaping the future of public education in Poland.

Levine is running unopposed for the single open seat on the Poland School Committee.

Her current three-year term runs out at the end of the month, and voters will make their choices for all elected positions on April 23 at the Town Office.

“I have the unique opportunity to volunteer and spend a lot of time at the schools,” said Levine. “I want to see what’s happening and what’s influencing my children’s lives.”

While Levine had only high praise for the staff in Poland schools, she noted that the community’s biggest challenge is dealing with growing needs. Discussions among the three School Union 29 school committees for Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot have surfaced about a tri-town middle school. No plans are in the works at this time, said Levine.

Levine also believed that keeping up with the technology needs of students will present challenges to the School Committee.

“I’m always concerned with the tax burden on the town,” said Levine. “And this will cost money.”

Another priority for Levine as a policy maker is continuing the high school’s efforts in preparing all students for college.

“Even if they don’t go, it’s important for them to be ready and to know how to apply because they may change their minds at some point in their lives,” said Levine.
