PERU – The Heritage School students of Peru spent the morning with Wayne Thurston and his father, Merle, learning about the maple syrup business in Peru recently.
The students hiked the line trail through knee-deep mud at times to see where the syrup ended up — in a large vat at the bottom of the hill.
The students then went into the sugar shack and Wayne explained the entire process of boiling and the bottling the syrup.
The visit ended with a special treat of vanilla ice cream covered by fresh maple syrup. Thurston can be reached at 562-7098 for more information. Heritage is a one-room private school for students in grades kindergarten through eight.
