FARMINGTON – A total of 24 Scrabble lovers shuffled their tiles, racked their brains and rolled through three games of Scrabble at the Literacy Volunteers tournament on April 3. Arthur Harvey of Canton was first-place winner with a total of 594 points. He also scooped up the Best Senior award.

Rob Washburn of Skowhegan and Roberta Carlstrom of Jay were the second- and third-place winners. Lucas Hayden, who attends the University of Maine at Farmington, took the honors as Best Student.

The Scrabble tournament was held as a fund-raiser for Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset counties. There are more than 100,000 adults in Maine who have difficulty reading, and Literacy Volunteers addressed the problem by training tutors to teach those adults to read and to function in society. Last year Literacy Volunteers worked with more than 100 students in Franklin County.
