PORTLAND (AP) – Matt Smith pitched six shutout innings, Mitch Jones knocked two homers and Robinson Cano went 4-for-5 as the Trenton Thunder beat the Portland Sea Dogs 7-1 Wednesday.

Smith stuck out five, walked three and gave up six singles en route to the win, which evened his record at 1-1. At the plate, Cano has had 13 hits in his last 23 times at bat and has notched seven RBI over that stretch.

Jackson Melian’s double was the key hit as the Thunder (6-4) scored all the runs needed to win in the second inning.

Portland (4-8) got on the scoreboard when Mike O’Keefe homered off reliever John Blankenship in the eighth inning.

Portland starting pitcher Abe Alvarez, a highly touted prospect, dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
