LEWISTON – D. Irene Sedgley, 86, of Lewiston, died on April 22, at d’Youville Pavilion following a long illness.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1917, in Brownville, a daughter of George and Annie Harrison. She was the only one in the family of seven children not born in Canada. She was raised and schooled in Quebec and New Brunswick.

In 1940, she came to Maine, enrolling in the Brunswick Hospital nursing program. There she met the love of her life, Howard Sedgley. In June of 1942, she completed her studies as a practical nurse and in December of that year married Howard.

For her, that began a long and happy life with her devoted husband. Family was always her main interest and comfort, so it was fitting that they were with her when she passed away.

She is survived by Howard, her husband of 61 years; her daughter and son-in-law, Althea and Dean Croxford of New Gloucester; daughter, Elaine Williams of Gray; grandchildren, Melinda Williams Reno and her husband Will of Winchester, Mass., and Derek Williams of Portland; her brother, Lloyd Harrison of Fredericton, N.B.; sister, Charlotte Zawitt of Montreal, Quebec; and sister, Bette Sussey of Fredericton, N.B.
