MASARDIS (AP) – A Masardis man was charged Thursday with murdering his 57-year-old father at his home on Route 11 in this northern Maine town, authorities said.

Michael MacDonald, 25, turned himself in at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton at about 1 a.m. He was being held without bail pending an appearance Friday in District Court.

Troopers went to Michael W. MacDonald’s home Wednesday night after receiving a call from a family friend to check on his well-being, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Troopers arrived to find him dead in the kitchen.

Dr. Margaret Greenwald, the state’s chief medical examiner, was on the scene for a preliminary examination of the body, which was being transported to her office in Augusta for an autopsy.

“The cause of death will await her conclusions,” McCausland said.

The younger MacDonald, known as Junior, had been living on and off at his father’s home in Masardis, a town of less than 300 people located just south of Ashland.
