NEW GLOUCESTER – Selectmen agreed Wednesday to appoint an ad-hoc committee in June to come up with plans for a new fire station.
The board said it wants a broad representation of fire and rescue members, and residents to recommend a location and building that meets growth needs for the next 25 years.
Fire Chief Gary Sacco and Town Manager Rosemary Kulow will define the committee’s structure and goals.
For nearly a decade there have been talks to replace the Lower Gloucester station and a satellite station at Upper Gloucester.
In other business, selectmen awarded a 1983 Pierce Mac fire engine pumper to Firetech of Randolph, Vt., for $4,000. The 1,000-gallon tank and three stage pump truck has 41,650 miles and the pump has 538 hours. It will be sold as is, where is.
Jamie Wright, executive director of the Southern Maine Cycling Club, who also owns Gorham Bike and Ski shop at Pineland Farms, said he plans to host a bicycle circuit race series this spring in New Gloucester.
Selectmen agreed the event could be held with the stipulation that marshals and a pace car are stationed on the Morse Road for safety. Signs will be posted at two ends of the road for the eight-week racing schedule, which goes from 6 to 8 p.m. May 5 to June 23.
All eight events are sanctioned and fully insured by USA Cycling, the governing body over competitive cycling in America. Insurance covers all parties involved.
A similar event has been hosted by Wright at the Scarborough Industrial Park for years. Wright said he expects anywhere from 20 to 65 participants.
