WATERVILLE – Lauren Olmstead threw a one-hit shutout in the first game and then drove in four runs in the second game to lift Colby College to 9-7 and 4-0 wins over Bates College in a softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

Olmstead allowed only a fourth-inning single to Kelly Kugel while striking out two and walking four. Wendy Bonner had a two-run single, Miki Starr scored twice and had a double, while Michaelyn Bortolotti and Kara Fagan each added one hit and one run scored.

Olmstead went 2-for-3 and had four RBI in the second game. Bonner added two hits and three runs scored. Colby’s Toni-Lyn Robbins pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out six and walking four.

USM takes two

BRUNSWICK – Natasha Jackson’s RBI single in the seventh inning propelled the University of Southern Maine to a 3-0 shutout win over Bowdoin in Game 1 of another softball doubleheader Thursday. Katie Mainville allowed just two hits while earning her 15th win of the season.

The Huskies (27-5-1) went scoreless for five innings before Jackson was able to cross the plate on an error by Bowdoin’s Megan Wyman in the sixth. Bevin Padgett also scored to make it 2-0 with one inning left to play.

In Game 2, Christan Lachapelle snuck in for an unearned run in the eighth inning to lift Southern Maine to a 3-1 victory.

Kristen Tong and Darci Holland tallied one hit apiece, while Melissa Henderson allowed just four hits in eight innings of play. Bowdoin tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth when Emily Nelson ripped an RBI double. Henderson recorded her 12th win of the season.

Women’s lacrosse

Plymouth State 14, Colby 8

WATERVILLE – Kate Sheridan netted six goals and added an assist to lead Plymouth State to a 14-0 rout over Colby College in women’s lacrosse action Thursday.

Kelsey MacDonald chipped in for the Panthers (14-0) with five goals, while single tallies by Bethany Brown, Jill Matteson and Amanda Spadafora completed the scoring. Carmen Villanueva made 15 saves while recording the win.

Sarah Burlingham, Emma Miller and Kate Wheeler led the Mules (6-8) with two goals each, while Courtney Drake and Julia Benedict also scored. The Panthers jumped out to a 8-3 lead at the half and were never challenged.

Keene State 16, USM 7

GORHAM – Michelle Mason netted four goals and added four assists, while Natalie Kent and Colleen Murphy added four goals and one assist each to lead Keene State to a 16-7 victory over the University of Southern Maine in women’s lacrosse Thursday.

The game was tied on three occasions in the first half. Autumn Wentworth scored her second goal of the game to account for the final tie at 3-3 with 13:24 remaining.

The Owls (10-3) then outscored the Huskies (2-9) by a 5-2 margin to forge an 8-5 lead at the break. Kent tallied three of her goals during this stretch. Jamie Litch made 12 saves in net for Keene to notch the win, while Jenna Wasylak turned away 15 shots in net for Southern Maine.
