Katie Morin sparks Lewiston’s 13-hit attack in a 12-3 win.
LEWISTON – After scoring just two runs in its last two games, the Lewiston softball team looked bound and determined to alter its offensive output Friday.
The Blue Devil bats awoke with authority, pounding out 13 hits in a 12-3 win over Lawrence at Marcotte Field.
Lewiston scored five runs in the first inning and seized early control.
“In the past couple of games, we didn’t really score any runs and to come out with five runs and be able to burst out like that was great,” said Lewiston catcher Ali Coleman. “It gets our confidence up.”
Lewiston had been blanked by Cony Monday and then lost to Leavitt, 6-2, on Wednesday. After a two straight losses, the Blue Devils (4-2) sensed a little urgency in reversing their fortune.
“We needed this,” said second baseman Meagan Marcoux. “This is a big win for us. Going in with two losses, we didn’t want to throw away something we could get a hand on. This win was good for us to get back on track and get going.”
After being quiet the previous two games, the Blue Devils offense packed a wallop against the Bulldogs (3-3) and had the bats heating up early.
Six hits in the first two innings helped Lewiston build the early lead.
Katie Morin led Lewiston with three runs, three hits and two RBI.
Marcoux also had three hits and drove in a pair. Coleman also had two RBI. Amanda Michaud and Kim Bechard each had two hits.
“We’re a really good hitting team, but our bats have been slow,” said Marcoux. “Whether it’s a fast pitcher or not, we have big hitters in the lineup. Our batting order is pretty stacked, and today, it showed a little bit. A lot of us got some good hits.”
Lewiston scored five runs on four hits in the opening inning. The Blue Devils also used its running game to frustrate the Bulldogs. Lewiston had eight stolen bases in the first inning alone.
“The girls know we’re an offensive running team,” said Lewiston coach Fred Royer. “If they get called out, we’ll still run.”
A double steal by Michaud and Morin helped set the table right away. A Bechard foul pop scored Michaud. Then a Marcoux single scored Morin. Coleman followed later with a two-run single up the middle. Lewiston made it 5-0 on a Jess Nadeau fielder’s choice.
“We really focus on getting hits right when we start at bat,” said Marcoux. “We have some fast runners on this team. So we can try to take advantage of stolen bases.”
That was all Lewiston really needed. Michaud scattered seven hits and struck out six while walking none.
Lawrence got one run back in the second on an Ashley Williams RBI single, but Lewiston added two more in the bottom of the inning. Morin scored on a single and three-base error. Then Marcoux singled home Bechard.
After Lawrence trimmed it to 7-2 with a Katie Seeley RBI double in the third, Morin hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and a Nicole Caron fielder’s choice made it 10-2.
The rest of the scoring came on a Michaud single following an Allie Morin triple in the fifth.
After Lawrence got a run on an error in the sixth, Caron scored after a Coleman single and Lawrence error.
“It was really important because no one wants to get started on a losing streak,” said Coleman.
“We really played with those two teams and those were really heartbreakers. To be able to bounce back brings our confidence right back up.”
