LEWISTON – Firefighters were battling a blaze at Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary late Saturday night.

Shortly before midnight a third alarm was called, calling all Lewiston firefighters – including those off-duty – to the scene, according to Fire Chief Michel Lajoie.

At 11:30 p.m, Lajoie said he wasn’t certain how large the fire was. “It’s set up pretty high in the wooded area,” he added.

Trucks parked outside the Montello Street entrance of the sanctuary and ran hoses up the trail to fight the flames.

The original call came in at 9:48 p.m. The fire investigator had already arrived at the scene, but Lajoie did not believe he would establish a cause until at least Sunday.
