FARMINGTON – Jean M. Syme, 79, of Farmington, died early Saturday morning April 24, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
She was born April 4, 1925, in Farmington, a daughter of Donald K. and Esther Savage Metcalf. She received her education in Farmington schools and graduated from Farmington High School and the University of Maine at Farmington.
She married Earl S. Atwood Jr., who died in 1968. She later married Col. Leander D. Syme, U.S. Army (retired). He died in 1985. In addition to being a homemaker, Mrs. Syme was a substitute teacher in local schools. She was a member of the Old South Congregational Church, the Colonial Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Monday Club (of which she was past president), the Order of the Eastern Star, the Garden Club and Gold Leaf.
Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She particularly enjoyed her summer vacation with her daughters at York Beach.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Greenleaf of Farmington, and Candace Beal and her companion Raynard Alley of Beals Island; a sister, Jane M. Keirstead of Farmington; grandchildren, Wendy Glass and her husband Marc, Joel Greenleaf and his fianc Angela Becker, Sarah Burtchell and her husband Jason, and Rachel Beal; great-grandchildren, Anna Glass, Nicholas Greenleaf, and Leah Burtchell; nieces and nephews, Andrea Keirstead, Kimberly Pierce, Megan Pierce and Benjamin Pierce.
