LEWISTON – John Paul Angelides, 88, died Saturday, April 24, at Central Maine Medical Center, following a long illness.
Born in Dover, N.H. on June 26, 1915, he was the son of Paul and Celina Fortier Angelides. Educated locally, he joined the United States Navy in 1941, served in both World War II and Korea, and moved backed to Lewiston after being honorably discharged in 1952.
He was married to the former Jeanette Kowalik, who passed away in 1972. In 1992, he married the former Gertrude Hebert.
Along with his brother, Leo, he owned and operated the Sheraton Restaurant in Lewiston for many years. He later worked as a deli manager for Shaw’s Supermarket until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement, he worked for the Hillsboro Club in Pompano Beach, Florida.
He enjoyed golf, and was a member of the Fairlawn Country Club for 25 years. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, and was an avid and lifelong Yankees fan.
Survivors include his wife of Lewiston; a son, John and his wife Pauline of Fairfax, Va.; a daughter, Terry Angelides of Amherst, Mass.; a step-daughter, Lucille and her husband Ron Baker of Pasadena, Calif.; a grandson, John C. Angelides and his wife Stephanie of Fairfax, Va.; two granddaughters, Amy J. Angelides of Arlington, Va., and Alexandra O’Rourke of Paris, France; a great-grandson, Nicholas Angelides of Fairfax, Va.; a niece, Stephanie Caldwell of San Diego, Calif.; two nephews, Paul Angelides and his wife Sherry of Lewiston, and Leo Angelides and his wife Debbie of Sydney; a step-grandson, Ron Baker and wife Anna of Duarte, Calif.; a step granddaughter, Kristin Baker of Manhattan, N.Y.; and two step great-grandsons, Andrew and Ethan Baker.
He was predeceased by a brother, Leo; and a sister, Olympia Stathes.
