Former Monmouth star and Sun Journal Player of the Year Tip Fairchild was named the Little East Conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 18.

Fairchild, a sophomore, picked up the first such award of his career after tossing a three-hit shutout against Keene State College last Saturday. He struck out a career-high 11 and didn’t walk anybody.

Fairchild picked up a save earlier in the week in the Huskies’ 5-4 win over Salem State.

On the season, Fairchild is 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA in seven appearances, including three starts. He has worked 30.2 innings, allowing 25 hits and seven walks while fanning a staff-high 33.

Opponents are batting just .217 against him. Fairchild, who also plays second base, is hitting .316 (24 for 76) with a team- high seven doubles, one triple, two home runs and 10 RBI.

Other local baseball players are enjoying excellent springs so far. At Bowdoin, former Livermore Falls ace Travis Dube is in his second year as the team’s closer and has already tied his club mark for saves in a season (four) and is three saves away from tying the school career record. Dube has four saves and has given up just five earned runs in 19 innings in 12 appearances. Former Edward Little standout Nick Lawler is batting a team-leading .382 for the Polar Bears. Gray-New Gloucester product Erik Morrison is 2-1 with a 2.92 ERA in eight appearances, including three starts. … Former Oxford Hills teammates Eric Cavers, Tyler Cummings and Garrett Olson have been reunited at Franklin Pierce College. Cavers, a junior catcher and leadoff hitter, leads the team in batting average (.390), slugging (.623), runs (43) and home runs (5), is third in RBIs (29) and currently owns a 12-game hitting streak. Olson, a freshman playing third, is sixth on the team hitting .317. He was named the Northeast-10 Conference’s Freshman of the Week on March 29. Cummings, a sophomore, has pitched in four games, with three starts, and is 1-2 with a 4.87 ERA. … Mike Daggett of Sabattus was recently named rookie of the week in the Commonwealth Coast Conference after winning his first collegiate start. The Endicott College freshman, who helped lead Oak Hill to the Class B title last year, is currently 3-2 with a 2.62 ERA.

Edward Little graduate Sarah Crispin is still outrunning her rivals since moving up to the collegiate ranks. The Tufts freshman won the gold medal in the 800-meter run at last weekend’s NESCAC championship with a time of 2:17.56. Throwers are carrying the load at Bates this spring as the Bobcats men and women finished first in the shot put and the hammer throws at NESCACs. Dustin Gauthier took top honors in the shot put in 52-11, while Scott Cooper, Jeff Davis and Jordan Upton swept the top three spots in the men’s hammer. For the Bates women, indoor national shot put champion Elizabeth Wanless topped the field with a toss of 51-9. Teammate Kelly Godsey is rewriting the record books in the women’s hammer. Her winning heave of 191-11 was nearly 40 feet further than her nearest competitor. Jimmy Velas, who led Falmouth to four consecutive state championships, headlines a recruiting class of eight players heading for Maine next fall. Veles scored 33 goals and assisted on 13 others during his senior season. The other in-state players committing to Maine are Maranacook goalie Piner Markovchick of Mt. Vernon, Winslow forward Joe Corey, Lawrence midfielder Marshall Holmes and Ellsworth forward Kris Tracy. Another incoming recruit is goalie Ben Pieotrowski of Colchester, Vt. The coach at Colchester is Lewiston graduate Dennis McCannell.
