MEXICO – People with ideas on how to keep Mexico moving toward a more beautiful, resident-friendly town are invited to attend a special community forum Wednesday night.
“Keep Mexico Moving” will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Calvin Lyons room of the Town Hall. Keeping with the town’s name, Mexican-styled foods will be served, door prizes awarded, and an informal atmosphere maintained, said Citizens Advisory Board Chairwoman Louise Arsenault.
“We want people to participate with ideas that will project small town U.S.A., to attract tourists, to promote business, to promote wellness,” she said.
A similar forum held nine years ago, titled “Night of a Thousand Ideas,” served as the impetus for many projects that have since been successfully been completed. Things such as regular bus trips to the Lewiston/Auburn area for medical appointments, new sewer and water lines, and the beautification of several small parks and the facades of business fronts.
Representatives from Management Intervention Services of Rockland will facilitate the discussion. Topics include business and economic growth, tourism, social and cultural assets, use of existing recreational facilities and beautification projects.
Several top priorities will be determined at the end of the evening. From there, Arsenault said the Citizens Advisory Board will further prioritize ideas, then channel those ideas to appropriate organizations or form subcommittees that will be charged with specific tasks.
Ideas will also be used to update the town’s economic development plan.
The advisory board has also asked students from Meroby Elementary School and Mountain Valley Middle School to come up with ideas for improving the town. Some students are expected to attend Wednesday’s forum with their parents.
“We want this to be informal, laid back, so people can voice their ideas,” said Arsenault.
