The recent release of the Environmental Protection Agency report on ozone pollution in Maine should give residents of Androscoggin County pause.

Though the town of Durham was the only town in the county designated as “nonattainment,” there are no sky-high walls separating Androscoggin from Cumberland and Sagadahoc counties, both designated as “nonattainment.”

Androscoggin’s 2,000 children and 8,000 adults living with asthma will feel the effects of high ozone no matter where they live in the county. The American Lung Association of Maine is involved in a number of national, regional and local collaborative projects to help reduce air pollution. In addition, we are working on a number of asthma education, research and advocacy projects.

The Lung Association’s first Androscoggin Asthma Walk will be on May 8. In addition to raising funds for asthma projects, the walk will feature an asthma education fair.
