FAYETTE – After about a five-year wait, people will finally have a chance to decide if the town will build a nearly $500,000 fire station.

Voters will be asked to accept a $250,000 community development block grant and to borrow $235,000 to match the grant to fund the project. Construction and land costs should not exceed $485,000, but actual costs won’t be known until bids are submitted.

The project began in September 1999, when townspeople saw a need to replace the old station.

The existing station has no running water or toilet facilities and limited meeting, storage, training and parking space.

An estimated $21,700 will be taken from the town surplus to buy four acres between Watson Heights Road and Route 17 for the station.

“The process of locating a new piece of property, negotiating with the owner, and completing soils, drainage and survey work has taken several months, said Town manager Jim Collins.

The special town meeting will be held a 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, at the Fayette Central School.
