YORK – Rita A. Alward, 93, formerly of Port Orange, Fla., Atria Assisted Living, Kennebunk, and Mayflower Place, Sanford, died Monday, April 26, in York. She fondly loved all her doctors and nurses.

She was born Feb. 28, 1911, in Littleton, the eldest daughter of Garfield and Frances Adams. Her only child, Lawrence Reed, was killed in the Korean War.

She was an active member of the Gold Star Mothers, Port Orange Methodist Church, and worked at the Captain’s Quarters, Daytona Beach, Fla., until the age of 88. She will be lovingly remembered for her bubbly, talkative personality and very sharp mind.

She is survived by a brother, the former Fire Chief of Auburn, Ralph Adams; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband of 20 happy years, Ernest Alward, who was a retired Sergeant Major with the Royal Canadian Army; four sisters, Marjorie Whalen, Arlene Palozie, Ruth Stone, and Marion Bagget; and four brothers, Gilbert, Burns, Preston, and Harold Adams.
