A review of the comprehensive plan is expected to see what changes could affect land use.

GILEAD – With a couple of planned developments in the offing and a major highway construction project under way, selectmen in this tiny northern Oxford County town want residents’ opinions on several land use changes.

A public hearing to get that input is set for 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, at the Gilead Town Hall on Depot Street.

Administrative Assistant Beverley Corriveau said selectmen plan to review the comprehensive plan, written in the early 1990s, for any changes or additions that could affect land use. She said one of the proposals is to bring back the five-person planning board, particularly because at least two housing developments are planned in the near future.

She said the town would like to appoint people to the Planning Board from Bog Road, North Road and the housing development located off Route 2.

Selectmen will also take comment on developing a moratorium on land use activity, including developments, until additional ordinances can be passed to regulate them.

The public is invited to provide comments on a proposal by selectmen to restrict the use of heavy weight vehicles, such as tractor-trailer trucks, on North Road.

Corriveau said many heavy vehicles, as well as an increase in the number of passenger cars, have been using North Road since the Maine Department of Transportation began a major highway project along portions of Route 2 earlier this year.

She said the town had the road paved only three years ago. But because of the heavy traffic, the surface is beginning to deteriorate. She said that the narrow, winding North Road could be dangerous when over-sized vehicles use it.

Selectmen will likely call a special town meeting to act on some or all of the land use issues within the next few weeks, she said.
