The Westwinds hail from New York.

SOUTH PARIS – The Westwinds, a select, mixed choir, will present a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 1, in the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School auditorium as part of their 2004 Spring Tour.

The ensemble hails from the Westfield Central School District in Westfield, N.Y. The group derives its name “West” from the name of their community and “wind” from the fact that air is the fuel for proper singing. Members of the Westwinds are selected by audition from students in grades 10-12. They rehearse outside of the school day and all members of the ensemble are also members of the school’s mixed choir.

Their music covers a wide range of styles from traditional choral literature to contemporary folk music and show tunes. Conductor is Kent Knappenberger, Westfield High School choral music teacher for the past 15 years.

Members of the OHCHS Show and Chamber Choirs will join the Westwinds on one selection. Admission is free, and donations will be accepted at the door.

An encore performance will be incorporated into the worship service of Hosanna New Testament Church, in Oxford, the following morning, May 2. The service begins at 10 a.m.

For more information, contact the Oxford Hills Music Department at 743-8914, ext. 1015, or Hosanna Church at 539-2295.
