KITTERY (AP) – Boats from the U.S. Coast Guard and marine patrols from New Hampshire and Maine searched late Thursday for a man who might have been left adrift after a 12-foot skiff he was sailing in capsized off the coast.

Two men and a dog were reportedly in the boat when it sank. The Coast Guard rescued one man and the dog. Officials said another man still could be in the water.

“They started catching some pretty good waves. They took one good wave on their stern which incidentally cut out their outboard engine. As they were trying to bail the boat out another wave hit and overturned the vessel,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Carl Hammond, based in Newcastle, N.H.

The man who swam ashore had a lifejacket on when he began swimming.

He thought the other man was following, but later could not see his crewman, Hammond said.

Coast Guard officials have not released either man’s name.

According to officials, the men had gone out early Thursday morning to catch lobster. They were unrelated and believed to be in their late 30s and early 40s.

The man who was found clinging to rocks near Gerrish Island was treated for hypothermia at York County Hospital.

The water Thursday night was below 50 degrees Farenheit.
