LEWISTON – The Public Theatre will present the acclaimed Figures of Speech Theatre Company’s adaptation of the classic Greek myth “Cupid & Psyche” May 24, 25, 26 and 27, at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. This is the theater’s final presentation in its 2003-2004 student matinee series.

Suitable for students grades 3 through 12, this magical and accessible adaptation of this classic story of love and trust rings as true today as it did 2,000 years ago. With great artistry, Figures of Speech Theatre combines puppets, actors and music with a whimsical sense of humor to bring this mythical tale to life.

“What better way to introduce students to Greek mythology than by seeing it live onstage,” says Public Theatre Artistic Director Christopher Schario. “And we offer students the unique experience of attending a first-rate professional performance and discussing that performance with the artists who created it.”

Figures of Speech has toured around the world and played Broadway’s New Victory Theatre. The troupe is a four-time winner of the coveted UNIMA Citation of Excellence, “the highest award in American puppet theater.”

Over the years, The Public Theatre has introduced thousands of students to live theater, many of these children seeing their first play on this stage. Children experiencing live theater can develop a lifelong habit of participation in the artistic and cultural life of their community, according to the spokesman. This sets the stage for these students to see their world in new and exciting ways, and to develop and expand their own artistic impulses.

The Public Theatre’s student matinee series is supported through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, Helen & George Ladd Charitable Corp., Maine Arts Commission, Maine Humanities Council, Shubert Foundation, Simmons Foundation, Lincoln Financial Group and numerous local businesses.

Tickets for student matinee performances of “Cupid & Psyche” are $5 each; study guides are available to teachers free of charge. All performances will be in The Public Theatre, at Lisbon and Maple streets in downtown Lewiston. For tickets and additional information, people can contact Chris Scott at the theater’s business office at (207) 782-2211.
