In the four matches played, Lewiston only dropped two games to Cony.

LEWISTON – When just six Cony High School athletes appeared behind the coach as the tennis team unloaded its truck Friday, Lewiston figured it was in for a short afternoon.

How short?

Try two matches completed in less than a half hour, and two others in less than 45 minutes.

“We’re playing a bit shorthanded today to start with,” Cony coach Tim Folsom said as the matches got underway. “For various reasons, we’re missing a few players.”

Lewiston won the first match, the No. 2 doubles match, by default, since Cony did not have enough players.

Nick Bonenfant got things rolling for the Blue Devils early, taking just 24 minutes to upend Rams’ No. 3 singles player Huy Trann 6-0, 6-0.

“One of the things we try to do with the kids is make sure they stay focused, no matter the strength of the opponent,” Lewiston coach Ron Chicoine said. “On that front, I was very happy with that. They played their game when they had an opportunity to ease up a bit.”

Adam Wilding followed Bonenfant with a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Gabe Hinds. That match clocked in at 27 minutes.

Senior captain Mike Burke was the first player to lose a game for Lewiston on the day, dropping one of the first three that they played. He went on to crush Tyler Hunt 6-1, 6-0 for the third Lewiston match win. That one took 36 minutes.

In the last match on the court, Ben Bergeron and Luke Bonenfant picked up their first varsity win of the season in doubles, besting Chris Perkins and Matt LeClerc 6-0, 6-1.

“It’s always a goal to win each match,” Chicoine said. “But you always have to look at the bigger picture, too. These guys know that while these matches are important, each one is a step toward a bigger goal.”

Lewiston remains undefeated (4-0) on the season, while Cony slips to 0-4.
