BURLINGTON, Vt. – Ryan Quintal homered and drove in six runs while Aaron Izaryk added four RBIs as the University of Maine completed a three-game sweep of the University of Vermont with a 14-4 pasting Sunday afternoon.

The Black Bears’ (25-16) Troy Martin picked up the win, going seven and a third innings and allowing five hits.

USM rolls

GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine pounded out 43 hits and scored 35 runs Sunday afternoon as they handed Husson College a non-conference sweep with scores of 18-5 and 17-5.

The Huskies had a season-high 20 hits in Game 1, then went three better in the nightcap with 23 safeties.

Adam Lemieux provided the story in Game 2 as he hit for the cycle.

Josh Armandi picked up his third win of the season in Game 1 while Sam Handy registered the victory in Game 2, going five innings before giving way to relief help.

Bowdoin sweeps

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College pounded out 28 hits to sweep a pair of games from Middlebury College in men’s baseball action Sunday afternoon with scores of 15-12 and 13-12.

Travis Dube came on in relief of Andrew Nichols to record the save in Game 1, retiring the last five batters to secure the win.

The nightcap saw another barn burner with the Polar Bears escaping with a 13-12 win as Tom McMahon earned the win in two innings of relief work.

Bowdoin was led by T.J. McLeod with six hits.

Amherst takes two

LEWISTON – Dave Levinson went 3-for-8 with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead Amherst College to a 6-2 and 8-0 sweep of Bates College in men’s baseball action Sunday afternoon.

Levinson was 2-4 with an RBIs in the first game and went 4-4 in Game 2 with two RBIs.

Nick Kehoe threw a complete game three-hitter in the first game, striking out five. Brant Ford picked up the win in Game 2, allowing four hits and one walk in six innings to complete the sweep.

Softball

Vermont 3, Maine 1

ORONO – The University of Vermont capitalized on key errors to score three runs in the top of the third inning to hand the University of Maine a 3-1 setback in the home finale at Mike Kessock Field in Orono Sunday afternoon.

Kate Haber blasted an RBI triple for the Catamounts’ first run. She scored on a dropped third strike for the eventual game-winning run and Heidj Gebo crossed the plate with an insurance run as Kate Ramsey doubled.

The Black Bears’ (22-10) lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Amy Kuhl who drove in Brittany Cheney.
