Town by laws call for fines as high as $500, in addition to court costs.

RUMFORD – Selectmen will act on myriad items Thursday, ranging from action on the extensive town meeting warrant to deciding whether to place restrictions on dogs in several town-owned areas.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Municipal Building.

Town Manager Robert Welch said because some pet owners don’t clean up after their dogs, the board will decide whether to post several municipally-owned green spaces, including an island on Prospect Avenue, all of Stephens High School Memorial Park, the walking trail along the Swift River, a grassy area along Canal Street, and possibly several other areas.

He said dogs are still allowed on those areas, but that could change if people don’t clean up dog feces.

“These areas could be posted for no dogs at all,” he said.

Town bylaws call for fines starting at $50 and rising as high as $500, plus court costs, for pet owners who don’t pick up after their animals.

The board will also act on the annual town meeting warrant. Selectmen have approved a municipal budget of $6.3 million and special articles totaling $372,000. Residents will decide on each money article, as well as on several proposed changes to the town’s bylaws and charter on June 7.

Other agenda items include: choosing a citizen of the year; acting on a monetary request by the Community Concerts Association; awarding contracts for the purchase of a sidewalk asphalt roller and a brush chipper; acting on several hawkers and peddlers, liquor, victualers and amusement licenses or permits; and deciding whether to grant permission to the Moontide Water Festival Committee to hold a children’s sidewalk art contest.
