STANDISH – Tip Fairchild had a round tripper as the University of Southern Maine scored two runs in late innings, pointing the Huskies to a 4-2 win over St. Joseph’s in baseball action Wednesday.
The Monks (15-23) scored first and led 2-1 after the second inning. Catcher Matt Prunier had two hits for St. Joseph’s.
The Huskies (27-9-1) tied up the game in the fourth inning and knocked off a pair in the eighth for the win. Nick Vadaro went 3-for-4 in the lead-off spot for Southern Maine, while Fairchild picked up a pair of hits, including a home run.

USM 5, Emerson 1
GORHAM – Melissa Henderson scattered four hits and fanned nine, while senior outfielder Darci Holland collected two hits, including a double, and scored two runs to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 5-1 triumph over Emerson College in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament.
The Huskies (32-9-1) broke the game open with four doubles and three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Holland began the rally with a one-out double, and scored when Christen Lachapelle followed with another double. Ang Cote drove in Lachapelle with a two-out double, before Jessie Becher plated Cote with the team’s final double of the frame.
The Huskies added two more in the bottom of the fifth to forge a commanding 5-0 advantage. Caterina Riitano and Holland stroked singles, while Lachapelle was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Emily Forbes and Tasha Jackson ripped consecutive singles to score Riitano and Holland. The Lions (25-16) averted the shutout in the top of the sixth, when sophomore Burke notched a lead-off single and later scored on an infield groundout.

Henderson twirled all seven innings to improve to 16-7 and tie the school record for the second time in her career. Erica Gagnon set the standard in 1999, and Henderson equaled it in 2002.
